A New Start!

And so the second quarter begins, and i start Blog numero dos. I will start off this quarter, with a reflection of the last. To begin, I will say that I am happy with the grade that I recieved. There are many things that I think that I could have done better behind the scenes of my Blog, but I'll save that for later, and I will first talk about the strong points of my finished project. First of all, I believe that it was very well organized, and was easy to understand, and recognize the main ideas that I was trying to point out. I think that I was very clear in my paragraphs. I said what needed to be said, just enough to make it easy to understand and relate to, and not much beyond that. I tried to make each post as interesting, and enjoyable to read and observe as possible. In my opinion, I set up my blog very nicely, with a variation in font size, and design. Also, the background of my Blog made it a bit bore exciting at first lance, giving the follower something to get excited about before even reading the first headline.

There are many things that I think I could have done better as well. Most of which are behind the scenes, in the library or at home at my computer. I feel like I could have been much more diligent in class and gotten more work done in class, Instead of taking the work time to talk with friends and check grades. I wasted a lot of time this way, and because of this, I had a ton of last minute work to finish the blog and turn it in on time. This quarter I'm going to try to focus and get as much work done as I can, in the time that is given to me. I will try to be more accurate in the different blog entries, and through them, I will try to paint in my readers head, the best picture of my book, that I can. In the beginning of this year, I wasn't sure whether or not I like the idea of blogging, and although it still seems like a lot of work, I guess I can admit that I would much rather be doing this than writing papers over our books. And the amount of work makes sense, for English III.

This quarter, I am reading a book called "Ship Breaker" It is about a guy named Nailer, who works a light crew, exploring old oil tanker wrecks along the beach, on the gulf coast of America. His job is to search the old ducts that lead down deep into the tankers, and salvage any wiring or other forms of metal that could be worth something. One day he and his coworker stumble on a clipper ship, full of luxurious valuables, that could easily make them more money than they could ever imagine. This is where the conflict arises. How are they going to cash the goods in, without their boss finding out and demanding all of it for himself? This quarter, you as the reader, can expect to see a lot more about this book. I will try to add visuals that will give you an idea of what is going on  in the book, and i will try to make it as interesting as possible. Hope you enjoy it!

Sites For Better Understanding

http://www.scbartoletti.com/  -This is the site of Susan Campbell Bartoletti. It talks about her books, and has a short biography of herself.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boy_Who_Dared  -This explains the book. It is Wkipedia but when i read through it, it seemed pretty accurate. It tells the story about Helmuth's life, and his death.

http://www.history.com/topics/world-war-ii  -This site is a history site, but it has a place that focuses around WWII. I think that knowing the setting of book will help the understanding of it, and the conflicts of the war.

http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Holocaust/Plotzensee.html -Here is a site that explains the history of Plotzensee Prison (The prison that Helmuth was kept, and killed in). Seeing this could help you better understand what Helmuth had to go through while waiting for the day that he would be released, or killed.

http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/hitler_youth.htm -The Hitler Youth was a way that the government took control of the children in the German community. Once they got to a certain age, they were required to join, as symbolism and proof, that they were true Nazi's. "The weak must be chiselled away. I want young men and women who can suffer pain. A young German must be as swift as a greyhound, as tough as leather, and as hard as Krupp's steel."

http://www.classicalconnect.com/music/5580 -Here is a a piece of composition on guitar. I think it fits the book very well. (I have explained this in another post.)

http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/162240/dictatorship -Although the German government would probably not admit to being a dictatorship, that is what they were. This site tells exactly what a /dictator/dictatorship, is. It also gives a list of past dictators.

http://www.worldwariihistory.info/WWII/United-States.html -Most Americans where in complete opposition to reentering a war. But they did. This is how, and why.

http://www.ww2incolor.com/gallery/ww2incolor -Here is a site that contains pictures of WWII. Seeing these really helps see what it was like in battle in this time period. It allows you to see what Gerhand had to go through as a soldier.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II -This is just the Wikipedia explanation of World War Two. Knowing the basics of the war really helps to understand the reasons behind each country that joined in and allied with the others.

http://mormon.org/faith?utm_source=Yahoo_MSN&utm_medium=CPC&utm_term=mormon%2Bbeliefs&utm_campaign=Mormonism_Mormon%2BBeliefs -This is a site that explains the mormon religion. Helmuth came from a mormon background, and church. Therefor, alot of the things that he was forced to do under Hitlers rule were against his religion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cto6mRGInk -This is a YouTube video about Helmuth Hubener. It explains what he wasn't afraid to do, to let others know the truth. It tells about how he committed a crime punishable by death, and was killed, despite the truth behind his war against lies.

http://www.mormonwiki.com/Helmuth_Hubener -Here, the fact that he was a hero in his community, is expressed. It is expressed through his belief system.

http://www.gdw-berlin.de/bio/ausgabe_mit-e.php?id=334 -This site is great because it explains the background of Helmuth. It describes him as a young boy as well as his short life as a teenager.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamburg -Here is the history of Hamburg. It tells about what it went through in WWII. It is a good way to understand the place that Helmuth lived in.

http://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&rls=en&q=map+of+hamburg+germany&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x47b161837e1813b9:0x4263df27bd63aa0,Hamburg,+Germany&gl=us&ei=wyCNTrPfAoWqsQLOkeCYAQ&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CC4Q8gEwAA -This, I found on google maps. It is a modern day map of Hamburg, it shows all the roads, and places, and it is a great way to understand what the city turned into, after the war, and Hitlers reign.

http://www.history.com/topics/gestapo -The gestapo were the guys who everyone feared for their brutality and their ways of getting people to say exactly what they wanted them to, by sheer torture, and interrogation. Here are some videos, and interview type things that better explain the Gestapo.

http://vanrcook.tripod.com/blitzkrieg1.htm -The way that Germany fought was unlike any other nation. They used a tactic called Blitzkrieg. This explains that.

http://library.thinkquest.org/C0111500/ww2/american/amerprop.htm -In Germany, they used radio to explain their victories, and would not let the citizens of Germany see any other propaganda, such as radio stations, posters, leaflets, or books. Here is some information, and examples of Americas Propaganda.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/worldwars/wwtwo/hitler_russia_invasion_01.shtml -This shows reports, similar to the ones that Helmuth listened to on his radio. They are examples of the BBC account on the German invasions of other countries.

My Comments For My Colleagues

Josh Darling said...

So, here is what i got out of this nick; You are a drummer, a cow lassoer, a basketball player, completely unwilling to hurt a fly, you like to fish, you live with your mom, you have a sister, you don't know how to read music, you played trumpet for a little while when you were younger, oh yeah and you are reading a book. I think you made this assignment into way more of a story of your life than an introduction to yourself, your book, and Read For A Life Time. So I defiantly think that you could have made this entry a little less personal and a little bit more English assignmenty.

Hey I am reading this book as well! I really enjoyed reading your first Blog, for several reasons. You seemed to really understand what the purpose of this entry was, and you expressed that in your writing. You also gave a very good explanation of the Read For A Life Time assignment. You also got me laughing in your description of why you enjoy reading and learning about the Holocaust. "No, I would never want to be a part of Hitlers team" TEAM? really? but aside from that, good job!

I enjoyed reading this. You seemed to really get your point across in a very casual way. Doing this makes it seem like you are very comfortable with this assignment and it gives me good reason to look foreword to reading your future Blogs. I think that you could have made a couple of your points of focus a little more detailed. For instance, I think that there could have been more detail in your explanations for the future blog prompts. But it seemed like you got all of your other points across very well. Good Job.
