Musical View

Here is a link to a instrumental, that I thought fit the style of The Boy Who Dared.

The Boy Who Dared is built by suspense. Through out the book, we see short glimpses of what the future holds for Helmuth. Every time you think that things could be gong a little bit better, or worse for him, your accusations are either denied or confirmed by a flash-foreward to a seen where Helmuth is rotting, waiting in jail, waiting for the executioner, trying not to let any hope seep into his constantly flowing thoughts. Through out the story of his life, leading up to his death, you are constantly reminded of the oppression that the Germans, Jewish, Polish, and the numerous other races are placed under as Adolf Hitler gains power. It gets harder and harder to see how things could possibly get any better.

Asturias Leyenda by Isaac Albeniz creates the same impression as each aspect of the book. Asturias Leyenda is a guitar instrumental. The fast tempo and fluctuating dynamics of the piece give it a suspenseful heat that seems to fit the state of Helmuth's life. As the piece progresses it hits a point where sudden, powerful strums shake the listener, in an identical way to the shock that is felt every time we see a sliver of what Helmuth's future holds. In the moments of horror, such as those when Helmuth is caught, and sentenced to prison, and most likely death, the music slows down to nothing but small sporadic sets of picking on the acoustic. This symbolizes the feeling of fear, and never knowing what is to come.
